🎃 Spooky Sculpting Fun at Wild Clay

An Experience Worth Getting Your Hands Dirty For

By Essy C October 22, 2025

Sometimes the best memories happen when you step outside your comfort zone. Recently, my family and I tried a new hobby together at Wild Clay in Claremont—and it turned into a night we’ll be talking about for a long time.

We signed up for their Spooky Sculpting class, a seasonal workshop where participants create Halloween-inspired clay pieces—think pumpkins, skulls, and little ghosts. It’s the perfect activity and a blast for both kids and adults.

Walking Into the Studio

From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed. Wild Clay is a family-run studio, and our instructor, Joshua Freeman, is not only a talented ceramic artist but also an incredibly patient and encouraging teacher. As a dad of five, he knows exactly how to connect with kids and make them feel comfortable in a creative space.

From Lump of Clay to Halloween Masterpiece

Pottery can feel intimidating for beginners, but Joshua guided us step-by-step, explaining techniques and the “why” behind them. We learned basics like hand-building and sculpting as he showed us how to “score” the clay and use “slip” to attach pieces. My six-year-old loved pressing in eyes, mouths, and small details, turning her ghost from a smooth ball of clay into a character full of personality. Using tools, we created ridges on pumpkins, lines on skulls, and even swirl patterns for a spooky flair. In no time, plain lumps of clay transformed into Halloween creations that felt uniquely ours. And the best part? No prior experience was needed—just a willingness to get messy and creative.

Why Families Will Love It

The highlight wasn’t just the art itself—it was watching my daughter’s confidence grow as her projects took shape. Wild Clay is about more than pottery; it’s about:

  • Building Confidence: Kids see their ideas come to life right in their hands.
  • Fostering Creativity: Every pumpkin, ghost, or skull is completely unique.

Making Memories Together: In a world full of screens, this is quality family time that sticks.

Classes for Everyone

Wild Clay offers themed classes like Spooky Sculpting, drop-in sessions, and memberships for families who want to keep learning. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned potter, you’ll feel right at home.
